The Faculty of Environmental Sciences emerged from theSchool of Environmental Designwhich was established in 1970 as a project in the Faculty of Engineering but began to function during the 97 academic session with an initial intake of 18 students. The School became autonomous as the Faculty of Environmental Design in the 1973/74 session.
The Faculty of Environmental Design was initially a single programme unit providing training in Architecture, In 1980 it was restructured into three interdependent departments or Architecture, Building Technology and City & Regional Planning.
Another important feature of the Faculty was the introduction in 1980 or six-year continuous professional degree programmes to replace the two-tier BES and MED programmes which were hitherto offered.
